Pediatric eczema symptoms typically appear after a baby is six weeks old, and parents who have eczema are more likely to have children with the condition. The rash, or less-common plaques, caused by eczema may clear for a little while, then reappear later. If you’re seeing flaky red patches or a weepy rash on your little one, and they seem uncomfortable and hard to settle, it may be because they have pediatric eczema and they’re itchy! Cradle cap, a very common skin condition for infants, is also a form of pediatric eczema.
Where Does Pediatric Eczema Form?
Before six months of age, babies tend to develop eczema rashes on their forehead, chin, cheeks, and scalp, but not in the diaper area. From ages six to twelve months, it’s most common to see eczema appear on the elbows or knees. In toddlers, you may see a rash on the creases of the elbows and knees, wrists and hands, or ankles. Toddlers may also start to develop the thicker plaques which adult eczema sufferers commonly get.
How Can I Treat Pediatric Eczema?
Treating pediatric eczema may require medication, but it’s important to understand that infants and young children absorb medications (both topical and oral) at different rates. Ask an experienced pediatric dermatologist for advice before you try treating your child’s eczema, so you can rest assured that you’re treating it safely. They’ll also help you discover what triggers your child’s eczema flare-ups so you can avoid them going forward. Common triggers include dry skin, heat and sweating, and allergens like pollen or pet dander.
For some types of pediatric eczema, a gentle regimen of bathing and moisturizing may help alleviate the discomfort and prevent the eczema sites from becoming infected. If you see yellowish pus or bumps on your child’s skin, you’re seeing signs of infection that may require medical treatment.
